Re-Roofing for Residential Homes In Illinois

What is Re-Roofing?

Re-roofing is when a second layer of shingles is applied over the first. Most communities allow for two (2) layers of roofing, some allow for up to three (3) layers though this is not recommended. The best candidate for this type of project is the original homeowner or someone with knowledge of the history of the roof being re-shingled. When adding an additional layer of roofing on a home you need to consider the weight factor. Depending on how many layers of shingles and the potential of a snow load, structural damage due to the combined weight needs to be a consideration.

Should I Consider Re-Roofing My House?

The condition of the plywood deck and top layer of shingles will determine if a re-roof is applicable. If the original roof has had no previous leakage as to cause damage to the decking, no soft spots on the roof when inspected and the old shingles are still laying flat as to let the new roof lay as flat as possible, then a second layer may be considered. Installing new shingles over curled shingles or bad plywood decking may telegraph through the new shingles causing an unsightly appearance for the new roof and a potential for wind damage. Some flashing details may not be replaced with this type of roofing procedure without additional costs involved.

A Cost-Effective Roofing Solution

Homeowners could save hundreds of dollars by re-roofing as it is a more cost-effective option due to the lack of need for additional materials such as an ice shield barrier, tar paper, labor and disposal costs of the original roofing materials.
